Hello Tennessee Valley Hikers!

This has been a very difficult past month for the Tennessee Valley and the state of Alabama as a whole with all the devastation from the April 27th storms.  I hope all of you have been able to weather this storm and will help rebuild and support the community as you have helped build and support the hiking community.  I can only hope that the severe weather is behind us now and that we will only be dealing with the heavy Alabama summer heat in the months to come.

While the storm recovery has been ongoing throughout the state, the legislative journey of the Forever Wild renewal effort carried on.  As many of you already read, the Forever Wild bill (HB126) was stalled in the Senate by Gerald Dial.  However, additional legislation was introduced that, if approved as expected at the end of the month, will put the Forever Wild renewal effort before the Alabama voters in November 2012.  This bill also bridges the gap between when funding ends on September 30th, 2012 and the vote in November.  So, it looks like we the people may truly get a chance to directly let our voices be heard about Forever Wild.

We have our next meeting coming up on Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 at 6:00pm at The Nook on Bob Wallace Ave. in Huntsville. We will be planning for the May trail work in the Walls of Jericho, discussing new event and activity possibilities, and talking about what opportunities we have to work on our part of the Alabama trail.

If you have not renewed your membership for 2011 yet, please go to http://www.hikealabama.org/sites/default/files/files/brochure2008.pdf to download the membership form and renew your membership or to become a  member and to help our organization and our voice grow.

Hello Tennessee Valley Hikers!
The weather is hopefully warming up for good and it is a great time to get out and hit the trails.  April is a great month in the Tennessee Valley when all the leaves are starting to leaf out, the temperatures are good, and the ticks have not yet reached plague quantities.  I hope you have all found time to make it out on the trails this spring or get some time to before it gets too hot.  Now would be the perfect time to do an overnight trip in the Walls of Jericho or hike that long trail in Monte Sano State Park that you have always wanted to.  Earth Day festivities are coming up as well.  The Tennessee Valley Chapter will have a table set up at Hays Nature Preserve on Saturday, April 16th for the Earth Day Celebration put on by the Huntsville Green Team.  We are looking for a couple of volunteers to help staff the table and talk to anyone interested in what we do or hiking in general.  Please email Lucas at the contact information below if you are interested in helping out.

The Tennessee Valley Chapter is now the proud owner of a brand new backpack blower for use in clearing the heavy leaf cover off the tread of North Alabama trails.  The blower was purchased with 20 percent coming from chapter funds and 80 percent coming from a grant from the state of Alabama.  We were able to put the blower to the test during the March trail work.  The two of us that showed up for trail work were able to clear a section of the Bear Den Point Loop in the Walls of Jericho in an hour that would have taken half a dozen people all day to clear with rakes.  This will be an invaluable piece of equipment. You can see it in action at our April trail work.

As many of you know, the state land up in the Walls of Jericho was purchased by the Forever Wild program.  Forever Wild’s 20 year charter is coming to an end and it is up to us to make sure our lawmakers know how important Forever Wild and the land it preserves is to us.  Please take a moment to let your local representative know that you want Forever Wild to be reauthorized as-is for the next 20 years. The bill is hitting the floor of the House and Senate, so now is the time to show your support if you have not already.  You can find out how to contact your representatives at http://www.legislature.state.al.us/misc/zipsearch.html.

We have our next meeting coming up on Tuesday, April 19th, 2011 at 6:00pm at The Nook on Bob Wallace Ave. in Huntsville. We will be planning for the April and May trail work in the Walls of Jericho, discussing new event and activity possibilities, and talking about what opportunities we have to work on our part of the Alabama trail.

If you have not renewed your membership for 2011 yet, please go to http://www.hikealabama.org/sites/default/files/files/brochure2008.pdf to download the membership form and renew your membership or to become a  member and to help our organization and our voice grow.

Of note for Chapter members, the Board agreed on an amount and payment schedule for reimbursing chapters with membership monies. $3 of each membership in a chapter will be returned to that chapter on a bi-annual disbursement schedule (summary per AHTS president Joe Cuhaj).

Hello Tennessee Valley Hikers!

The 2011 conference up at Monte Sano State Park last weekend was an unqualified success.  We had around 100 attendees (the final count is still out), we had beautiful weather, and we had a lot of great presentations, demos and hikes, and a wonderful dinner capped off with Nimblewill Nomad’s fantastic talk.  If you did not get to listen to Nomad, make sure you go see him if you get the opportunity again.  This was a great way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our organization and to usher in the next decade.

I forgot in the last newsletter to recap our January trail work and to thank all those who came out to help.  We had eleven people come out and help and were able to clear the entire Bear Den Point Loop and a couple of blow-downs on the new Post Oak Falls trail.  We will be picking up where we left off this Saturday and clearing the first couple miles of the Post Oak Falls Trail.  We will be car pooling from the Piggly Wiggly in Gurley at 7:30am or you can meet us at the Walls of Jericho hikers parking lot at 9:00am.  Make sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and work clothes.  If you have work gloves, hand saws or loppers, please bring them.  Let me know if you plan to join us by 8:00pm on Friday so I can make sure we have equipment for everyone and that no one gets left behind.

You can find out how to contact your representatives at http://www.legislature.state.al.us/misc/zipsearch.html.

We have our next meeting coming up on Tuesday, March 15th, 2011 at 6:00pm at The Nook on Bob Wallace Ave. in Huntsville. We will be recapping the March trail work in the Walls of Jericho, discussing the new Post Oak Falls trail in the Walls, recapping the conference, and talking about what opportunities we have to work on our part of the Alabama trail.

Hello Tennessee Valley Hikers!

We had a great day of trail work in November in the Walls of Jericho last month.  Four of us spent several hours trimming back growth, clearing blow-downs, and doing general maintenance on the main trail down into the Walls.  We are looking forward to working on the new long trail in the Walls in January and hope you will join us.  2010 has been a great year and we are looking forward to hosting the 2011 conference here in the Tennessee Valley and using the publicity generated by the conference to expand and enhance our chapter.  Thank you all for everything you have done this year and join us again in 2011 for a hike or an opportunity to improve our local hiking opportunities!

We will not be having a December meeting since we will be meeting in January before we have any further events and will be discussing all relevant info in January anyways.  So, the next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 18th, 2011.

Hello Tennessee Valley Hikers!

The big topic for this month is the Walls of Jericho trail work coming up on Saturday.  We will be doing four to six hours of general trail maintenance on the main WOJ trail.  Please email or call Lucas at the information below by Friday evening if you plan to attend so we can get all equipment and logistics set.  Also, the blaze orange trail crew t-shirts are in and will be given to all those members who come help!

The AHTS Fall leadership meeting was held in Huntsville in October and a lot of progress was made with the 2011 conference planning.  The 2011 conference site is up and running at http://con2011.hikealabama.org and will updated regularly so you can check it out and get registered early.

We will not be having a November meeting due to location scheduling conflicts.  If there are any suggestions for another free place to meet besides the Gander Mountain, those suggestions would be much appreciated.  The next meeting will be in December.
